The ACS School Bus Driver is an important member of the team and mission of delivering academic excellence to all students. The bus driver is responsible for:
I. Performance Abilities
- Operate varying sizes and types of school buses used to transport pupils
- Familiarity with the geographic service area of the route
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal rules, regulations, ordinances, and laws regarding school bus operation
- Alert with ability to exercise good judgment concerning emergencies, disabled vehicles, and abnormal driving
II. Responsibilities
- Follow established schedules/routes
- Maintain appropriate fuel level of vehicle
- Maintain an acceptable standard of cleanliness of vehicle
- Monitor mechanical condition by performing daily inspections (pre-trip, in between and post trips).
- Report deficiencies to school principal using Daily Inspection Report
- Always drive safely and defensively
- Be prepared to conduct emergency evacuation drills
- Report bus and/or student accidents/injuries to the school principal
- Administer first aid as necessary
- Uphold ACS school bus passenger rules and regulations (3 Rules: stay in my seat, hands to myself, whisper voice)
- Maintain behavior logs as needed or directed by school principal
- Prepare and submit Bus Conduct Reports when needed to the school principal
- May be requested to attend parent meetings by the school principal
- Maintain acceptable communications with parents, staff, and the public
- Exhibit a positive image as a representative of Aspen Community School
- Satisfactorily complete a course in bus driving instruction as presented by the Aspen School District
- Communicate bus service needs with the Director of Transportation and the school Principal.
III. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of Colorado laws and rules regarding traffic safety, including traffic signs, signals, and devices
- Knowledge of safe motor vehicle operation including checking gas, oil, signals, wipers, brakes and other components to assure proper levels and operation
- Manages oneself (is organized, prepared, and punctual; manages resources; meets deadlines; follows through on commitments; demonstrates appropriate physical appearance relative to job and environmental expectations) in a manner that enhances the image of public education
- Displays willingness to learn new information
- Satisfactorily completes a course in bus driving as presented by the Aspen School District Transportation Department
- Ability to get along well with children and command their respect
- Learn bus routes and complete scheduled routes in timely manner, exhibiting flexibility as changes in schedules and routes occur
- Develops and maintains rapport and effective relationships with children and adults contacted in carrying out duties and responsibilities by using courtesy, diplomacy, collaboration, cooperation, support, and professional conduct
- Establish and maintain good working relationships with teachers, administrators, and all those contacted in the course of work
- Observe all district policies and procedures
- Due to the safety responsibilities involved with this position, drivers must be able to communicate clearly in English both orally and in writing; bilingual Spanish is a plus
- Ability to pass state-required physical exam and random drug testing per Colorado DOE Rules and Regulations for operators of school transportation vehicles
- Ability to pass a background check and drug and alcohol test upon hiring
- Ability to use Google and its products, familiarity with computers and emails.
- Satisfactorily complete a course in bus driving instruction as presented by the Aspen School District
IV: Minimum Qualifications
- Current driver’s license with good driving record
- Possession of or ability to obtain a Colorado Commercial Driver’s License, special school bus operator's permit
- First Aid/CPR certification, or ability to obtain
- High School education or equivalency
- 4 to 6 years of driving experience preferred
Salary Range: $32.00-$40.00/per hour
Part-Time Work: 6:30 a.m.- 8:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Mon, Tues, Thurs, Friday. Wednesdays: 6:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
